SDSU Art & Design Wayfinding
Studio Design | Wayfinding
Overview
Built in 1900s, the SDSU Art & Design building shows its age in its minimalist colors as well as confusing layout. Through this project, the client tasked us to design a wayfinding system in which would bring life to the building as well as function as a guide for current and future students. Creativity was a encouraged in this project with the only restrictions being the area allowed to be treated due to university guidelines.
Research
Research began with the university itself, taking inspiration from its rich history as well as its mission-style architecture. Arches are a focal point in many of the building across campus and became an integral element to the system.
To create a design that felt cohesive with this landscape, a sense of interactivity was one of the components to be included as seen in other forms of way finding.
Final System
The final system encompasses elements that emphasize the adjectives community, creativity, and inclusiveness given by the client. The use of a wide range of colors was chosen to represent the variety of majors and students that can be found within the college. The font Neuzeit emulates the sans serif in the official Art & Design logo. Thick bold outlines were chosen to offset the brightness of the color palette.
Applications
With wayfinding being the objective of this project, areas like the elevators, main courtyard, and galleries were treated.
