National City 8th & B
Experimental Design | Mural Design
Overview
To humanize a mixed-use apartment complex that was to be built, ARTS (Art Alive) and Protea Properties commissioned a dynamic mural which would represent the culture and community found within National City, San Diego. With standard restrictions like mural size and materials, multiple layouts and with shared icons were created by the class.

Research
Located close to the bay and the naval base, National City is a melting pot of people and cultures. To understand this further, intensive research was conducted. Abstract icons were then made from those defining elements.

Final System
Based off the clients aesthetic of abstraction a set of icons from each student was created. Each icon represents one aspect of National city. From those sets, each student chose icons that fit a general composition (lines, patterns, and solids) and made a series of mural layouts.
